Synopsis:
Two sworn enemies start to fall in love through anonymous notes in How to Speak Boy, a fun and charming YA novel from Tiana Smith.
Quinn and Grayson have been fierce speech and debate rivals for years. They can't stand one another, either in competition or in real life.
But when their AP Government teacher returns their school assignments to the wrong cubbies, they begin exchanging anonymous notes without knowing who the other one is.
Despite their differences, the two come together through their letters and find themselves unknowingly falling for the competition. Before the state tournament, the two of them need to figure out what they want out of life, or risk their own future happiness. After all, what’s the point of speech and debate if you can't say what's in your heart?

*Excerpt*
“Picture time! Let’s do the whole group now.” My mom arranged us in front of the wall, Naomi and Dax to my side with Grayson’s arm around my waist. This was the closest we’d ever been, and by far the longest we’d ever touched. His hand rested on my hip, every part of me burning under his touch. My mom seemed to take forever fiddling with the adjustments on her camera. She looked up for the briefest of moments and my jaw dropped at her expression. She was totally doing this on purpose.
Traitor, indeed.
“Any day now, Mom,” I said. My hand was resting on Grayson’s arm and I was pretty sure I was starting to sweat, which I was sure Grayson would find super attractive.
“What’s the matter, Quinn?” Grayson whispered in my ear. I hated that. It sent shivers down my spine and made me feel all … confused. “Do I make you nervous?”
Yes.
“No.”
He chuckled and I pinched his arm.
“You wish,” I said.
“Maybe I do.”
What was that supposed to mean? I was going to spend the rest of the night thinking about it. He could be saying he liked me, which wasn’t likely. Or he could be saying he liked the attention, which I already knew. Or, worse of all, Carter could have been right about him all along.
One thing was for sure, in that moment I was one-hundred-percent glad he’d said it low enough that no one else could have possibly heard it, especially my mom who was busy snapping pictures and then looking at them with a much too big of a smile taking over her face.
“Okay, I think we’ve got it,” she said, holding out the camera for us to see. I escaped from Grayson’s arms with relief.
The pictures were cute. It didn’t even look like I hated Grayson. I was smiling and happy, so I deserved some kind of award. Really, I was just glad they were over with and I wouldn’t have to do it again.
“Now I need to get only Grayson and Quinn,” my mom said, bursting my bubble. Already, my hands started to clam up again. Why couldn’t I be one of those girls who never sweat? “Naomi, you and Dax can go to dinner now. I hope you have a lovely night.”
Naomi hugged me, then waved goodbye without looking back. How could she leave me like this without any backup? Some best friend she was. They took off in Dax’s truck and suddenly I was alone with Grayson. And my mom.
Awesome.
