With a background in art, photography and animation, Sandy King’s filmmaking career has included working with John Cassavetes, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Mann, Walter Hill, John Hughs, and John Carpenter. She has produced films ranging from public service announcements on Hunger Awareness to a documentary on astronaut/teacher Christa McAuliffe, and major theatrical hits like John Carpenter’s Vampires. From working underwater with sharks in the Bahamas to converting 55 acres of New Mexican desert into the vast, red planet of Mars, new challenges interest and excite her. The world of comic books is no exception. It allows her to bring her art and story telling experience to a new discipline with an expanded group of collaborators. She is married to director John Carpenter and lives in Hollywood, California.

John Carpenter is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, editor and composer. Although Carpenter has worked in numerous film genres, he is most commonly associated with horror and science fiction films from the 1970s and 1980s.

Numerous films in Carpenter's career were critical and commercial failures, with the notable exceptions of Halloween (1978) and Escape from New York (1981). However, many of Carpenter's films from the 1970s and the 1980s, such as Dark Star (1974), Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), The Fog (1980), The Thing (1982), Starman (1984), Big Trouble in Little China (1986) and They Live (1988) have since become cult classics, and Carpenter has been acknowledged as an influential filmmaker.

**About the Author**

Howard Shapiro lives in Pittsburgh, PA with his wife and two sons. He is the Controller for the Pittsburgh-based Visual Effects firm, Animal Inc., and he has written four children's books and The Stereotypical Freaks was his debut graphic novel.

His 2008 book, Hockey Player for Life, has been the #1 downloaded children's hockey ebook on Amazon's Kindle chart since its arrival as an ebook in November of 2011.

His Hockey Days book was the only book featured in the December 2007 Sporting News Annual Gift Guide as a Best Buy Gift for Children. Through a corporate sponsorship program he set up (and maintains), since the 2010-11 season, both of his children's hockey books have been given to NHL teams (over 2,500 copies to date) for use in their community and educational initiatives.

Since 2006 his annual charity raffle, which he matches dollar for dollar donated, has raised funds for several hockey-related charities including the Mario Lemieux Foundation, Hockey Fights Cancer and the Keith and Lisa Primeau Scholarship Fund.

Manga publishing in North America has definitely seen its shares of highs and low, from the manga boom in the early 2000s to the crash ten years later, caused by a perfect storm of the U.S. recession, Borders bookstores closures, and the growth of online piracy. So how are things now? Get a taste of what's hot, what's not, and what's next for manga in North America and Japan, from top publishing pros including Leyla Aker (senior VP, publishing, VIZ Media), Kurt Hassler (VP, publishing director, Yen Press), Ben Applegate (associate director, publishing services, Penguin Random House), and Erik Ko (chief of operations, Udon Entertainment). Moderated by Deb Aoki (Publishers Weekly, Manga Comics Manga).

  

 

*My Thoughts*

I entered this panel to get information on what’s hot and what’s not in the manga industry, so I know what direction to take on my own story. Most of it was recommendations for manga to read, what manga is popular or new, both of which I already knew. But some information was new to me, like Josei or women’s manga isn’t well known and therefore doesn’t sell very well, but that might as well be common sense. Another genre that’s tough to sell is “Slice of Life” and “sports” manga because why read something based upon what you deal with already in your own life. Some manga recommendations included Princess Jellyfish, Planetes, and a Silent Voice. What’s new to the manga industry, however, is light novels or manga versions of classics like The Scarlet Letter. The light novels tend to sell more if there was a manga of it already published. The most popular genre that sell is dark fantasy, although fantasy or anything to escape life, in general, is popular. While I did get information on what I wanted to know, I learned about new releases and although the panel itself only had about 20 attendees people were pretty enthusiastic. It was a job well done on the panelist’s side. They didn’t take anything too seriously and kept talking, they knew what they were supposed to do and stuck to what they know. The bad part is that they did get to any Q&A.
