*Excerpt*

Glory looked away while Mrs. Beyers set their breakfast plates on the table.

“Why are you doing this, Mother?” Malcolm leaned back in his chair and folded his arms. “I thought you liked having her here.”

“I do, son. You know that.” Anita paused and recovered coolly. “But she should have every opportunity to pursue whatever she wants. You remember… like the unlimited educational opportunities you had.”

“So, then, you’ll explain to Dad why I’ll be leaving Chicago to follow her to Wisconsin or California or wherever she chooses to go to school?” Malcolm’s smirk was triumphant.

“Malcolm, for God's sake, let the girl grow up! You’ve got years before the wedding. I don’t see why she shouldn’t be out experiencing the world. Just because you didn’t take the chance doesn't mean she shouldn’t.”

Malcolm winked at Glory and quickly finished his breakfast then got up and kissed his mother’s cheek. “I love you, Mother. This was fun.” He nodded at Glory. “See you downstairs. We’ll grab coffee on the way.”

Glory watched Malcolm leave and then turned to see a proud smile on Anita’s face.

“You hafta give ’em small victories sometimes,” Anita said. “Remember that, Precious. Anyway, we’re flying to Ann Arbor, Michigan, next Saturday so you can check out the University of Michigan. I’m still waiting to hear back from Spelman and Jackson State.”

“But, Miss Anita, Malcolm said—”

“Precious, this is your life.”

“But… I wouldn’t have this life it wasn’t for Malcolm,” Glory said. Those were the words that her mother had drilled into her head and her heart, and sitting in this beautiful place, Glory knew them to be true. “It’s not right for me to be ungrateful and rebellious.”

“Wanting things for yourself is not ungrateful, Precious. In fact, important men, like my son is gonna be, need rebellious women at their side. He’s gon’ make some stupid decisions, and you’ll need to rebel to protect him. This is lesson one.”

“But… I don’t know—”

“Don’t worry, Precious,” Miss Anita said. “I can handle my son. Grab your things and run along, now.” She sipped her tea. “If he wanted you to stay docile, he brought you to the wrong place.” She winked at Glory. “I’m from the South. Where do you think rebels come from?”
