Synopsis:
A decade that transformed America

The Sixties shook America to its foundation – the assassination of an idealistic young president, a tragic and unpopular war, a battle for civil rights, a cosmic clash of riots and burning cities, and an explosion of sex, drugs and rock’n roll.

For four young people, the Sixties is a decade of promise and freedom. For orphaned Troy, it’s the joy of living with his new family and exploring the world of flight and outer space. For Tara, the girl he loves, the power of song as she evolves into a rock’n roll star. For his new brother, Mick, a football hero and rebel, a time to question everything, including the fast-growing war in Vietnam. And for Daisy, the girl Mick loves, a chance to fight for equality, join the Peace Corps, and expand her study of the human mind.

America is the first of Mike Bond’s seven-volume historical novel series, capturing the victories and heartbreaks of the last 70 years and of our nation’s most profound upheavals since the Civil War – a time that defined the end of the 20th Century and where we are today.

Through the wild, joyous, heartbroken and visionary lives of four young people and many others, the Sixties come alive again, as do its questions: what is life? What is freedom? What was lost, what was won?

*My Thoughts*

Note: This review contains NO spoilers

I'm not really big on reading historical fiction, but I do read this genre from time to time. Well, when the book grabs my interest or curiosity. Despite all that, I was somewhat intrigued with this one by bestselling novelist Mike Bond. Being a new author to me, I found America an intriguing tour through America in the 1950s and 1960s.

America, a first in a 7-volume historical fiction series, read like a coming-of-age novel with regards to the four characters this book focused on. The author takes these characters on an adventure through America's rich and compelling history. On the other hand, America did have parts of being slow which, in turn, was distracting me to stop reading; however, I did continue reading. Yes, there's a lot of historical information, but then there is a lot of information. Don't get me wrong, the author skillfully wrote this book intertwining the growing years of these characters with America's provocative and enthralling history during the 50s and 60s. That's just it, this is fiction. The author adeptly entwined history into this fiction, and made it into an enjoyable (to an extent) read.

Mike Bond's masterful writing deftly created a story with well-developed and fascinating characters in the captivating setting of America during the 50s and 60s. In the end, I found America a provocative and engaging read. America would be a good read for those historical fiction fans.
