Synopsis:
Tess McBray was dying. The Solstice Syndrome had no cure, and she resigned herself to an early grave. But just when she gave up on survival, all her symptoms mysteriously disappeared.

All but one symptom, anyway. Something is wrong with Tess’s hands. They absorb any material they touch, and her skin turns to wood, or steel, or concrete. It doesn’t take this comic-book obsessed 21-year-old long to figure out what’s going on: somehow, she’s developed super powers. And she’s not the only one; across the country, people are coming forward and sharing their gifts with the world. In her own city, where the police are battling a human trafficking operation, a masked vigilante called The Fox is saving lives and stopping criminals.

Tess doesn’t know where she fits into this new, super-powered world. But when people around her start disappearing, she can’t just sit on the sidelines. Teaming up with The Fox to create the world’s first superhero duo might be the only way to rid her city of evil and save the people she loves most.

*Excerpt*
Chancing a glance over my left shoulder, I confirmed that the man was still behind me. His hands were tucked into the wide pocket at the front of his dark hoodie. We locked eyes, and fear stabbed my chest again. He dropped back a few paces, but when I turned my face forward again, I could still feel his stare boring into the back of my head. No. This wasn’t coincidence. He was following me.
My breath caught. I tightened my grip on the tiny canister of Mace, visualizing pulling it out of my bag, spinning around, and blasting it into his eyes. Was it even possible, or would I just spray wide, somehow managing to blind myself in the process?
Thin tendrils of panic began to creep around my organs. There was no way I’d be able to fight him off when he grabbed for me, and it had become a definite when in my mind. I wanted to walk more quickly, but I was terrified he’d realize I was onto him and that would spark him into making his move. Ahead of me, the white-and-blue banner of Helena’s Place glowed comfortingly in the twilight from the other end of the block. I knew that sign from the internet search I’d done while looking for an apartment. Safety lay just over that diner.
Don’t run, I cautioned myself. Act normal.
The word echoed in my mind. Normal. Normal. Normal. In an instant, it lost all meaning. There was no normal. There was just me, a tiny girl who was literally just skin and bones. And then there was him, this hulking monster with something in his hoodie pocket.
What’s he hiding in there?
I imagined a chloroform-soaked rag, a switchblade, or even a gun, and picked up my pace, nearly sprinting toward my building. I didn’t want to look behind me; I was sure if I did, I’d see his face inches from my own and feel his hand close around my wrist. But when I was within a few yards of my building, I knew I had to check again.
If he’s still following me, I decided, I’ll duck into the diner for help.
Eyes wide, I turned my head to look over my shoulder once more. He was still there, but he’d allowed the distance between us to grow so he trailed me by half a block. The tension in my chest loosened, and a sigh escaped my lungs.
And then the toe of my beat-up sneaker caught the edge of an upraised section of sidewalk, and I pitched forward. By instinct, my hands rushed upward to protect my face, and the rough concrete shredded my palms as I dove into it. My canister of Mace went flying, and I heard a faint clink as it landed in the street.
Footsteps thundered toward me from behind. I twisted my neck to see the man who’d been following me, now sprinting toward my prone body.

Caryn Larrinaga is a Basque-American mystery, horror, and urban fantasy writer living in Utah with her husband and cats. Her debut novel Donn's HIll (March 2017, Immortal Works Press) garnered rave reviews from fans of the cozy mystery and paranormal genres, and her new urban fantasy Superhero Syndrome (September 2017, Twisted Tree Press) will be out this Fall. Watching scary movies through split fingers terrified Caryn as a child, and those nightmares inspire her to write now. She lives in a 90-year-old house with a colorful history, and the creaking walls and narrow hallways send her running (never walking) up the stairs from her basement. Exploring her fears through writing makes Caryn feel a little less foolish for wanting a buddy to accompany her into the tool shed.

When her fingers aren't glued to her laptop keyboard, Caryn also enjoys binge-watching Netflix with her husband, reading, playing video games, and filling up her phone's flash memory with pictures of her cats. *Excerpt*
I felt someone’s eyes on me but ignored them. I knew what I looked like. I knew how my hazel eyes had started to look too big for their sockets and how my swollen joints looked wildly out of proportion with my thin limbs. I snuggled into the blankets and pulled out my sketch pad, drawing the people around me to keep my fingers warm. In front of me, a short woman with poofy red curls was digging around in a picnic basket, handing sandwiches to the two small children who sat beside her. To my right, a middle-aged guy with glasses was cringing as he tried to pop the cork on a champagne bottle. I flinched when he finally succeeded. The cork shot off into the trees, and the people around him laughed nervously, probably as happy as I was that they hadn’t lost an eye.
A lump formed in my throat, and I gripped my pencil tighter as I sketched. Everyone here had a future. They had something to look forward to tomorrow… and the day after that. Once the meteor shower was over, they’d go home to warm kitchens and cups of hot cocoa and talk about how perfect and beautiful the night had been.
And I… well, I’d be here until someone found me, I supposed.
The sky above us was rapidly darkening. Millions of stars shone, and everyone in the clearing stared upward, waiting for the show to begin.
The universe did not disappoint.
Sometime around midnight, a streak of light appeared above me. I gasped as it bolted partway across my field of vision before vanishing. A few minutes later, another appeared. Then another. It was unlike any meteor shower I’d ever seen, and from the gasps and oohs around me, I could tell I wasn’t alone in my awe.
I tasted salt. When did I start crying?
The cold seeped through my jacket and Davies’ blanket, stinging my skin, but it didn’t bother me. My tears could freeze right on my face for all I cared. I could melt into the ground beneath me and not even feel it. There was no looking away; I was riveted by the magic above me.
Three lights appeared in the sky at once. They were much brighter than the streaks that had preceded them, and they tore through the stars like soldiers rushing into battle. My eyes went wide. I knew it had to be an optical illusion, but they appeared to be coming right at me.
As the meteors sped toward the clearing, a rushing sound filled my ears, growing louder with each breath. A wave of nausea hit me, and I realized I was about to pass out. It’d been happening a lot lately. The edges of my vision fuzzed into blackness, but the cluster of meteors shone in the center, still appearing to speed directly at me.
This is it, I thought.
This was no ordinary fainting spell. It was different; I could feel it. The skin from the top of my head down to the soles of my feet began to tingle and burn, and my heart pounded in my ears.
These were my last moments.
A face, so much like my own, swam in front of my eyes. My sister smiled at me, but her eyes were filled with sadness.
“Goodbye, Bethany,” I whispered.
And the world went dark.

*Excerpt*
I wish I’d been with the people I loved on the day the world changed. Then again, if someone had said, “Hey Tess, reality as you know it is about to be turned upside-down. You should probably witness this moment with someone you care about. Anybody fit that bill?” I would’ve barked out a bitter laugh and told them I’d rather be alone. Which, as it turns out, I was.
The meteor shower was all over the news. CNN covered it nonstop in the hours before it was visible, bringing on astronomers and astrophysicists to explain why it was such a big deal for a meteor shower of this size to be happening in the middle of January. Apparently, our scientists were supposed to be able to predict this kind of thing. The fact that one had snuck up on our collective set of observatories and satellites was—to quote one NASA representative—“extraordinary.”
I didn’t care if it was unprecedented. I didn’t care if people around the world were calling it a sign or a portent of the Second Coming or whatever. I just knew it was beautiful, and I wanted to see one more beautiful thing before I died.
The trick was explaining that to the floor nurse.
“Miss McBray, please go back to your room.” Nurse Davies crossed her beefy arms over her chest and planted her white-sneakered feet to the floor. “We’ve been over this before. You’re in no condition to leave.”
“How do you know?” I growled. “Nobody here can even tell me what my condition is.”
I shifted the weight of my duffle bag on my shoulder and leaned to the left, craning my neck to gauge the distance between Davies and the elevators. Only a few dozen yards. Sure, she towered over me. Sure, in the month I’d been in the hospital my body had wasted away to little more than a skin-wrapped skeleton. But I might be able to make a run for it.
Davies shook her head. “Do you think you’re going to find the answers out there?”
“Maybe. I don’t really care.”
She glared at me, and I knew exactly what she was thinking. It was the same thing she’d spat at me every time I’d fought against the IV, or questioned the contents of the murky soup they forced me to eat, or requested—and then repeatedly demanded—to have my comic book collection brought into the hospital. And just when I began to worry she’d disappoint me by refusing to lean on her catchphrase, she said it.

“Stop being so melodramatic.”
