Now that Will had a girlfriend, staying for dinner had seemed all right. But Gina soon discovered its dangers. She sat at the kitchen table, while Ian and Harry prepped a dinner salad at the counter on stools. Will was making his first casserole.
Watching the busy threesome, she longed to join in. If she was Will's wife, she'd share  dinners with them every night. They'd go on outings--to the beach or the park. At bedtime they'd call goodnight to each other, Walton-like as they lay in their beds. The boys in their room, she and Will in his.
Heat coursed through her at the thought of sharing Will's bed. He glanced her way and stilled, as though he sensed her fantasies. Damn. I'm blushing again.
Harry started toward the table, carefully balancing a bowl of black olives. He set it down next to Gina and said, “Bree is really big in front.” He cupped both hands on his chest to demonstrate.
“Really.”  Just what she wanted to hear.
“Yeah. Why is that?”
“Well….”  She shot Will an anxious glance. Knife in hand, he pointed toward her, as if to say, ‘Go for it’.
Turning back to Harry, she cleared her throat. “Those are called ‘breasts,’ Harry.”
“Breasts,” he repeated.
“Yes."
“Why does she have them?” he asked.
“Breasts contain milk to feed babies.”
“Does Bree have a baby?”
“I don’t know." She frowned. Will should be having this conversation, not her. Attempting to draw him in, she called across the room. “Does Bree have a baby, Will?”
“No, she doesn’t.” He walked to the refrigerator and took out a carton of milk. She watched in open-mouthed disbelief as he poured a tall glass, lifted it high to salute her and then drank
Ian piped up. “Do you have breasts, Gina?
Groaning inwardly, she faced his wide-eyed curiosity. As a scientist, she believed in giving children the facts about sex when they asked. In a matter of fact manner, with careful forethought. Harry and Ian had caught her by surprise, and their father--the milk-gulping clown-- was no help. Even so, she gave the boys a basic explanation of babies and breasts.
She lost their rapt attention when helicopter rotors thumped overhead, and they dashed outside to catch a glimpse. Slumping with relief, she turned to Will, who leaned against the counter watching her. “Still thirsty?” she asked.
He smiled and set down his empty glass. “You looked so tense when they asked about Bree’s boobs--”
“Breasts,” she corrected.
“Breasts, right. I thought a little humor might ease the situation.”

“Ease it for who?” she asked.
 “For you, of course.”
She shook her head. “I think you’re the one who’s uncomfortable with the subject.”
Laughing, he pushed off the counter. “No way.”
“No? Glad to hear it.” She stood and walked toward him. “Because their next question will probably be ‘where do babies come from?’ And you get to handle that one.”
He stiffened. “You’d do a much better job.”
“Oh no.” It was her turn to laugh. “You need the practice.”  Ignoring his startled expression, she picked up the milk carton and filled the glasses at the table.
“Got any books on the birds and the bees?”
“I’ll go online and find something,” she said.
“Thanks.” He rubbed his jaw, visibly shaken.

A sense of humor was a must when Karen Muir taught elementary grades and Head Start, and she's always loved books and movies that make her laugh. Karen's Fish Out of Water series from Entangled Publishing deals with heroines thrust outside their comfort zones. Their first meetings with their heroes tend to be quirky. An English Lit major at the University of Washington, Karen now reads mostly genre novels. Contemporary and historical romances and mysteries are my favorites. She loves camping--out in the wilds and close to nature--with all the comforts of our motor home. Sitting by a clear mountain stream with a good book to read is her idea of heaven.

On the family room couch, Ian and Harry flopped down on either side of Gina and snuggled close. She put her arms around them and read Where the Wild Things Are. The boys grew quiet. Good sign. They were drowsy.
When she finished a second story, their eyes were closed. Finally. I've worn them out.
She'd give them a minute to sink into deep sleep, then resume what might be her last search of the house. Leaning her head back on the couch, she closed her eyes. She would start with Will's black filing cabinet. In her mind's eye she saw herself opening the top drawer.
A swarm of butterflies flew out, and Harry and Ian leaped to catch them, squealing and knocking over several block towers. The center drawer of the desk began spewing black smoke. She grabbed a potholder to wrench it open with one hand, while picking up the jangling phone with the other. Will's velvet voice purred in her ear. "How's it going?"
"Just great!"
The boys became burning bundles in her arms, and she grew uncomfortably warm. She lifted her head and opened her eyes to check Harry. Sleeping soundly, he looked innocent and sweet, not at all the bratty beast who'd confronted her yesterday with his water gun. She ran her fingers through his hair and across his damp brow. She turned to do the same to Ian, then sensing movement, glanced up to see Will approaching slowly.
Caught in the cross-hairs of his gaze, she froze. He stopped in front of her and slowly loosened his tie. A surge of attraction stirred low in her belly. Why did she find this man so compelling? Framing Kyle meant he had the morals of a snake.
"Sorry to wake you." His midnight soft voice held a hint of laughter.
"No problem." Damn. He was here, and her chance to search the rest of his house was gone.
The twins stirred at her sides and awoke.
"Hi, guys," Will said. "How was your day?"
Harry rubbed his eyes. "Ian broke the window."
"Gina broke the washing machine," Ian countered.
“We had ants for lunch.”
Stunned, Gina looked from one boy to the other.  The debrief continued.
 "Gina said a bad word."
"Two times," Ian confirmed.
At the shock in Will's eyes, she groaned. She was toast.
He knelt to examine the stack at her feet. "I see you got some books.
"Yeah, we went to the library," Ian said."
Harry was not done ratting her out. "We made cookies and got flour all over the floor."
Ian frowned. "They were black."
"We had a water fight."
"Gina wore your pajamas." Hands over their mouths, the boys snickered.
Will stood, his brows raised. Her cheeks burning, Gina studied the carpet. "Sounds like you had a busy day," he said.
"Yeah," Harry agreed. "It was cool."
Gina smiled. It had been cool, but she was going to be fired for a dozen reasons. Time for a quick exit. She scooted off the couch and turned to the boys. "Thanks for letting me spend the day with you guys."
She shook their limp hands. "Goodbye, Harry. Goodbye, Ian."
Disappointed frowns replaced their smiles, and guilt gnawed her. She had earned the boys' trust and now she was leaving.
“I’ll see you out,” Will said.
“No need.” But he and the boys trailed her to the door, as she kicked herself for botching her one-day trial. Maybe it was for the best. Ian and Harry were troubled boys who needed a real caregiver with lots of kid skills, not a clueless pseudo-nanny who was out to nail their dad.

She reached the front door and turned to give the boys a parting wave.

*Excerpt*
Halfway down the sidewalk a gush of cold water splattered Gina's back. She shrieked and spun around. Harry stood behind her, his Mega-Monster squirt gun cradled in his arms.
 “Gotcha!”
“Knock it off,” she warned. Kids made her nervous.
He grinned. “Can’t get me.”
She paused, knowing as soon as she turned her back, he’d douse her again. No big deal. Cool water actually felt good on this hot summer day. Still, Harry shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this behavior.
He sprayed her again, clearly hoping to lure her into his chase me" game. Briefly, she wondered what a real nanny would do, then shrugged and turned to leave. Four steps later, a splash of cold water hit the back of her neck.
Ignoring the assault, she kept walking. Let the little monster have his moment of triumph. His father roared like a drill sergeant and called his sons ill-behaved.  No wonder the kid was a brat.
The awareness stopped her cold. Turning to regard the obnoxious four-year old confronting her, she realized she was looking at the child she herself had once been. Behind Harry’s taunting grin and in-your-face manner was a child desperate to be noticed. A child who cried out, “I’m here. Don’t ignore me."
She had been a brat for many years too. Ignored and resented by her alcoholic mother, she had learned early on that negative attention was better than no attention at all. Seeing Harry in a ew light, she considered giving the poor kid the acknowledgement he craved. The nanny job was hisntory. What did she have to lose?
Smiling, she moved toward him. “Okay, pardner, you asked for it.”
He dodged out of reach as she passed him on her way back to the porch. Kneeling before the giant toy box, she began taking out items, one by one.
He spoke from beside her. “Whatcha doin’?”
“Looking for the other Mega-Monster. There’s got to be two.”
He watched her for a moment, then left. She was still sorting through the toys, when he reappeared and held out a gun identical to his. She stood to take it from him and turn it on its side. It was empty. “I need ammo.”
“Me too.” He led her to a faucet on the side of the house where they both filled their guns.
“Ready?” she asked.
“Yeah.” Eyes gleaming, he sprayed her in the face.
She returned fire and laughed as he shrugged off rivulets of water that ran down his neck and soaked into his shirt. The guns’ pump-action, continuous spray worked extremely well. She and Harry both got thoroughly drenched in the exchange.
“Can’t get me,” she taunted, running for a nearby pine tree. Harry followed her around the trunk and closed in, saturating the front of her blouse and jumper. She retaliated with a steady stream to his face. Ian chose that moment to join in the fray. Still naked, he pelted Gina and Harry with small pine cones.
The melee progressed into the backyard, as they darted among trees and shrubs amidst squeals and laughter. Gina forgot her high-stakes mission and couldn’t remember the last time she’d acted this goofy. The boys seemed to be having a good time, too.
When she ran out of water, Harry sprayed her mercilessly. Hands up in surrender, she quickly backed away and slammed into a rock-hard body. “Ow!” She pivoted sharply and met the harsh glare of Will Sinclair.
Startled, she pitched backward, her arms flailing to keep her balance. Will grabbed her  shoulders and wrenched her close to his chest, then twisted to shield her body with his as they both hit the ground hard. The jarring impact passed up through his body to hers. Air whooshed from her lungs, as she sprawled over him chest to chest, in a tangle of arms and legs.
Gasping for breath, she couldn’t believe this was happening. Only seconds ago, she’d been playing with the boys. Will groaned painfully and shifted beneath her, and she felt his…maleness. She closed her eyes and longed to be far, far away.
A second groan prompted her to act. Scrambling off Will, she pushed against his chest and inadvertently jammed him squarely in the groin with her knee.
Oh, no. His sharp intake of breath told her she’d hurt him. Badly. Wincing, she stood. Will rolled onto his side and curled into a ball, his eyes closed.
"Is he dead?” Harry asked.
