Suddenly she didn’t want it to be fake. Not anymore. He might be keeping something from her, but he shared easily and willingly, and that had to count for something. Levi stood so near her, thumb rubbing her check, body nearly brushing hers from closeness.

She inched forward, closing the gap, body damn near humming at his proximity. His head shifted toward hers and that was all she needed before lifting on her toes and meshing her lips with his.

He returned her kiss, pressing her against the wall as she flung her arms around him, holding him close. No one could see them, so this wasn’t some chaste-yet-explosive kiss in the middle of the living room. This wasn’t even a show for her family, though the fact they were in the bathroom together wouldn’t be lost by anyone. Gaby didn’t care, not with his hands sprawled on her back, pressing her closer to his hard chest, making her want to lick him—and not like Bengi would.

She shifted even closer, every hard inch of him against her curves, and she plum forgot to breathe. Not with this man against her, his tongue in her mouth, and those hands sliding up the sides of her torso. Just a little higher, and around to the front, and her desperate nipples would be very happy.

Noise came from the hall and Gaby stilled. “Where’d you hide it, Izzy?” said one of her little cousins. “Yeah, tell us!” said another, and the softer voices followed, perhaps telling the kids to stop interrupting the Seder.

The same Seder that Gaby and Levi missed by being lip-locked in the bathroom.

She pulled back, and Levi’s eyes opened, heavy-lidded with lust, and she had to fight not to wrap herself around him again like a pretzel. 

“Sorry,” she started to sign.

He wrapped his hand around hers to stop the motion, yet now his hand was even closer to her breasts, wedged between them, in fact, skin against skin in the V of her dress. Her self-control threatened to break free of her weakening grip, and she knew she had to pull herself together.

He held up a thumb—no skin off his back—and eyed the new app on his phone. He switched to Gaby’s message thread.

Levi: Can you test something out for me? My friend gave me a new speech-to-text app to try, but I have no clue how well it works yet.

Gaby read, then looked at him and nodded. He opened the app, waited for the program to load, then showed it to Gaby. She bit her lip, eyes flickering upward in thought, and all he could focus on was that plump bottom lip dented by teeth.

He really wanted a taste. Could that be part of the ploy?

She started speaking, and thinking dots appeared on his app. He waited for words to show up, but nothing did.

Gaby had stopped, and he held up the empty screen to her. She frowned, then held the phone closer to her mouth, speaking again, and he got transfixed by those lips again, until words appeared on the blank app screen and forced his attention to shift.

Let’s see…not sure…what food…lucky as fucking.

Levi blinked, then blinked again. What the hell? He stopped paying attention to the app, looking at Gaby, whose lips still moved as if she talked about the sky, not…

He swallowed, the off handed suggestion crawling under his skin. But it couldn’t be right. Could it?

She stopped talking, eyebrows lowered, and he turned the phone for her to see. Her gaze roamed over the screen, then her lips burst open and curved and her shoulders shook. She leaned forward, laughing hard enough her cheeks turned pink.

So, she didn’t say fucking.

Gaby collected her phone, shoulders still bouncing as she typed.

Gaby: Wow, that program is bad, huh? I didn’t know what to say so I mentioned food. I believe that was the “we’ll have turkey not stuffing” line. While turkey can be lucky, I don’t put it on par with fucking. Chocolate, maybe, but not turkey.

He made the mistake of locking eyes with her. Something simmered below the good humor, and thoughts of chocolate and Gaby and very little clothing filled his head.

He closed the app. Time to focus on their mission.

He picked up the paper and wrote one letter: A, then pointed to her hand and his, which was back in the shape.

“A?” she asked, like an idiot, but… oh! The alphabet!

He tapped his nose then took her hand again, rearranging her fingers to be straight, with her thumb across her palm.

B.

He was teaching her the alphabet. And since each touch of his hand to hers made her all tingly, she had to concentrate extra hard. This would work, if she could pay attention. They needed some way to communicate beyond writing, otherwise what would her family think?

She knew what they would think, the same thing Riley thought. The same thing the low pulse deep in her belly wanted, that this relationship was purely sexual. But a sexual relationship wasn’t what one brought home for Passover.

A half hour later she still didn’t know the difference between D and F, and she kept messing P up, but she had the gist of it. Sort of. All the mistakes frustrated her to no end, but Levi sat, relaxed shoulders, smile on his face, as if this were a tranquil evening at home. And his mellow state was contagious.

Or maybe that was the wine.

He pointed to her and then made a motion with his hands, “L-E-A-R-N G-O-O-D.” He formed the letters painfully slow, and it took a few repeats, but she amazed herself by following.

When she realized what he meant by those two words, she blushed—blushed! Acting like she hadn’t had a compliment in ages. Deep inside she knew it had been a while—a long while thanks to Tom—but not enough to warrant blushing.

She thought of the alphabet and the shapes and her fingers and made her first attempt at putting a word together. “T-G-S-N-P Y-O-V.”

It took another ten minutes for him to get her to correctly spell “thank you.”
