BLOG TOUR: The Apocalypse Seven by Gene Doucette

Welcome to the Official Blog Tour for Gene Doucette's The Apocalypse Seven. Today, on our tour stop, we have a guest post to share featuring the topic: Ten Ways to Get Inspired to Write. We also have a tour-wide giveaway to share as well. So... Be sure to check it out and grab your copy now! Follow the tour, HERE.

Genre:
Adult
Science Fiction/Dystopian
Publish Date:
May 25, 2021
Publisher:
John Joseph Adams/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Synopsis:
This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whatever.

The whateverpocalypse. That’s what TourĂ©, a twenty-something Cambridge coder, calls it after waking up one morning to find himself seemingly the only person left in the city. Once he finds Robbie and Carol, two equally disoriented Harvard freshmen, he realizes he isn’t alone, but the name sticks: Whateverpocalypse. But it doesn’t explain where everyone went. It doesn’t explain how the city became overgrown with vegetation in the space of a night. Or how wild animals with no fear of humans came to roam the streets.

Add freakish weather to the mix, swings of temperature that spawn tornadoes one minute and snowstorms the next, and it seems things can’t get much weirder. Yet even as a handful of new survivors appear—Paul, a preacher as quick with a gun as a Bible verse; Win, a young professional with a horse; Bethany, a thirteen-year-old juvenile delinquent; and Ananda, an MIT astrophysics adjunct—life in Cambridge, Massachusetts gets stranger and stranger.

The self-styled Apocalypse Seven are tired of questions with no answers. Tired of being hunted by things seen and unseen. Now, armed with curiosity, desperation, a shotgun, and a bow, they become the hunters. And that’s when things truly get weird.

*Ten Ways to Get Inspired to Write*
10:
I had nothing else going on.

9:
No seriously. I have to plan to have days where I have nothing else to do in order to write. Boredom is a huge motivator.

8:
I solve a problem with my work-in-progress in my head that has to be added to the manuscript immediately.

7:
I’ve come up with a wonderful bit of dialogue, but it’s four scenes away and I need to write my way to it first.

6:
I quite desperately want to know how this story is going to end.

5:
I want to make the nightmares to go away. You might think it sounds as if I need therapy and you’re not wrong, but for now just know that if I go too long without writing I get really bad nightmares.

4:
Related to the nightmares, I’d like to get a good night’s sleep again. I will continue to “write” in my head rather than sleep, which sometimes means I don’t get any writing done the next day because I’m too tired, and then I’m writing in my head again that night because I didn’t get to commit any of what was in my head to the page and I’m not sleeping. It’s a vicious circle.

3:
The threat of poverty if I don’t write is pretty strong.

2:
I’ve made certain promises to my readers, like, “I will finish this series.”

1:
There is a beautiful, perfect version of the story that exists in my mind and nowhere else. I can almost guarantee that when it’s committed to text it won’t be as beautiful and perfect as I’d hoped, but I would like to get as close to it as possible.

Praise for The Apocalypse Seven

“Doucette’s ’seven’ aren’t just 'magnificent'—they're also entertaining as hell.” —Scott Sigler, New York Times bestselling author of the Infected Trilogy

"The adventure I've been looking for! Never once did I know what to expect, and I loved being proved wrong at every turn. Far more mind-bending than a book this fun has any right to be." —Zack Jordan, author of The Last Human

“[A] riveting postapocalyptic outing… Doucette’s vibrant prose and unique premise make for an enticing adventure.” —Publishers Weekly

“A cinematic, speculative exercise in which a ragtag band saves the world, kind of.” —Kirkus Reviews

BLOG TOUR: Reentry by Peter Cawdron

Genre:
Adult
Science Fiction
Series:
Mars Endeavour, #2
Publish Date:
June 11, 2019
Publisher:
John Joseph Adams/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Synopsis:
After almost dying on Mars, astronaut Liz Anderson returns to Earth, but not to a hero’s welcome. America is in turmoil. The war is over, but the insurgency has just begun. So while life on Mars may have been deadly, at least up there she knew who the enemy was. Along with her, Liz has brought the remnants of the artificial intelligence that waged war on two planets. Buried somewhere deep within the cold electronic circuits lies the last vestiges of her dead partner Jianyu. Liz is torn, unsure whether he’s somehow still alive in electronic form or just a ploy by an adversary that will go to any length to win. Heartbroken and treated with suspicion, she finds herself caught up in the guerrilla war being waged on Earth, wondering if the AI threat is truly gone, or if it has only just begun.

*Excerpt*
The senator asks, “Do you dream, Dr. Mathieson?”
“Yes,” I reply, not feeling comfortable with where she's leading the conversation, knowing this is a trap.
“Do you participate in your dreams?”
“I guess so. Yes.”
“Do you ever meet people you know in your dreams?”
“Yes.”
“Do you talk to them? Do they talk to you?”
“Yes.”
“But they’re not real, right? You know that.”
“I do.”
“They’re not conscious. They’re an illusion, fabricated by your own mind, but they’re convincing nonetheless. How can you be sure the AI isn’t toying with you in the same way? How do you know this isn’t just mimicry?”
“I—I.”
Senator Bettesworth challenges me. “You’re a scientist, Dr. Mathieson. Surely you understand the need to be objective. Just because a computer passes a Turing test and fools you doesn’t mean it’s conscious, does it?”
As much as I hate to admit it, she’s right. Reluctantly, I say, “No.”
“So why should we believe you?” With a flick of her fingers, pointing at the stack of hard drives sitting beside me, she adds, “Or him.”
“Him? Don’t you see? Even you’re struggling to make these distinctions.”
“Have you ever wondered what it means to be conscious? To be alive?” The senator's ignoring my point, but I can see where her reasoning is leading. “Do you really think copper wires can harbor life?”
“I know I’m alive,” I say. “But I have no guarantees about you—about any of you. This could all be a dream.”
“Except reality isn’t confined to your expectations,” the senator replies. “Reality is what happens when you’re not looking. This is no dream.”
“No. It isn’t. But what is life? What does it mean to be conscious? Aware? Are dogs conscious? Or gorillas? Or chimpanzees? Of course they are. Is it really such a surprise to see consciousness arise in wafers of silicon?”
