Kelcie was the last off the bus, the frigid air seeping through her jean jacket and hoodie. As she slung her backpack higher on her shoulder, a woman fell in step behind her.

          Kelcie glanced over her shoulder, seeing a silver boston’s finest patrolman’s badge on the woman’s lapel. Snow-white hair in a bun, a baseball cap, her hand gripping the top of a baton, the cop tossed Kelcie a lopsided sardonic grin that raised the hairs on the back of her neck. Police gave her the heebie-jeebies. Grilled for hours more than once for things she didn’t do, and a few things she did, Kelcie never took it as a good sign when they came too close. She picked up the pace, scooting around bodies until classmates surrounded her.

          The museum was busy and loud, with loads of parents with strollers and other classes roaming around. Kelcie slowed her pace, walking several steps behind the rest of her classmates, hoping they’d forget she was here.

          “Stay with the group,” someone called from up ahead.

She hung her thumbs on her backpack strap and stared at the blue veins running through the polished white marble floors as they jolted up a few flights of stairs, through an echoey muraled rotunda, and into a room that transported them into ancient times.

          There were Egyptian pharaoh statues, chiseled stone tables with hieroglyphics, cabinets of jewelry from ancient Greece and Rome. It was all nice enough, but what Kelcie found in the next room was way more interesting.

          Shields, swords, spears, knives, and staffs hung on the wall, all at eye level, all begging to be touched. Kelcie checked to make sure the room was empty, then ran her finger over the grooves on the pommel of a long sword. The placard said it was Viking. Another glance over her shoulder told her she was still alone, her classmates’ conversations and laughter wafting from the other room. The coast was clear. Kelcie set her backpack down. A thrill ran through her, shifting her pulse into overdrive as her fingers hovered over the grip. She knew she shouldn’t touch it. Knew she would probably get caught, but that never stopped her before. Her lips curled into a mischievous grin as her fin- gers wrapped around the cold metal grip. The steel blade was so heavy it took two hands to lift the sword off the rack.

          She lunged, thrusting the tip at a round wooden shield, care- ful to stop before it struck, then pivoted, taking a wild swing, almost cutting Elliott Blizzard’s head off.

Erika Lewis grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, spent summers with her grandparents in Worcester, Massachusetts, and currently lives in Los Angeles, California. With a passion for storytelling set in magical places, she spends as much time as she can traveling. When she’s not writing, she can generally be found scribbling notes in a blank book while wandering through abandoned buildings, all kinds of museums, and graveyards.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University, her list of credits straddles the comics and novel space, including Game of Shadows from Macmillan’s Tor Books, Firebrand and Acursian from Legendary Comics, #Guardian from Awesome Media & Entertainment, and The 49th Key from Heavy Metal Publishing. Random Things About Erika Lewis's College Years

1.  I was a math major who took a lot of theater classes.
2.  I was in a sorority.
3.  I had a roommate who used to hollow out the center of a peanut butter jar and drop those chocolate covered caramel Rollos in, swirl, then eat for breakfast.
4.  I ate way too much pizza and drank too much beer, and gained a lot of weight. I don't recommend doing that. Took forever to lose it.
5.  I saw REM play in a tiny bar next to campus on a random weekday night, fairly typical for Nashville.
6.  Hair bows were popular. I just cringed.
7.  Will Purdue, the basketball player, lived in my freshman dorm. He was always in front of me in the cafeteria. He was so tall and I was so short that I was forced to stare at his booty for those 10 minutes a day. Not that I'm complaining.
8.  I took a media class where the professor showed us naked pictures of himself. I think that would be defined as inappropriate nowadays.
9.  I loved taking Abstract Algebra. Don't judge!
10.  I took a semester abroad that led to  me writing Game of Shadows!

**About the Author**

Erika Lewis graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Math. And what do you do with a degree in Math? You become a writer of course… eventually…

She moved to the west coast following her dream to work in television. And after fifteen glorious years developing and producing for truly awesome places, like Sony Pictures Entertainment, Fireworks Television, 20th Television, that’s a division of Fox if you didn’t know that, and then at G4, where she could finally be free to be the nerd she had always been. She had more collectible toys in her office than even the famed executive producers of Attack Of The Show and XPlay. At least that’s the way she remembers it.

So how did this circle back to the beginning of this bio? A Math major becoming a writer? Because she’d actually always been a writer, she just never told anyone. She would write and write, edit and edit, then realize that it wasn’t good enough and go back in for yet another pass. And when she finally had several projects she really loved, that’s when she knew it was time to unleash them to the world.

Her first project, a graphic novel, The 49th Key, is currently being featured in Heavy Metal Magazine, and will be released in trade in summer, 2017. Along with her amazing partner, Jessica Chobot, she’s currently working with LINE Webtoon and Legendary Comics on Firebrand, an ongoing comic series. Her first novel, Game Of Shadows hits the bookstore shelves February 28th, 2017 from TOR/Forge Books, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers.

There are several other really exciting projects that you will be hearing much more about soon, but if she leaked them now, she’d get in big, big, big trouble. She resides in the sunshine state of California. When she’s not chained to her laptop, she’s usually playing with her big fluffy Golden Retriever, or running, or at one of the bookstores or comic shops by her house.
