I make a playlist for each manuscript I write, and I listen to it over and over again throughout the entire process. These are playlists for the two books in the Run To You series, Deception So Deadly and Deception So Dark. Some songs are romantic, and others have a dark, urgent, dangerous tone—just like the books. You’ll notice that “Wildflowers” by Tom Petty is on both playlists; “Wildflowers” is Tessa and Tristan’s theme song, and it’s mentioned in both books. It’s also one of my very favorite songs of all time.

Clara Kensie, author of dark fiction for young adults...don't forget to breathe...

Clara Kensie grew up near Chicago, reading every book she could find and using her diary to write stories about a girl with psychic powers who solved mysteries. She purposely did not hide her diary, hoping someone would read it and assume she was writing about herself. Since then, she's swapped her diary for a computer and admits her characters are fictional, but otherwise she hasn't changed one bit.

Today, Clara is the author of dark fiction for young adults. Her debut series is the romantic thriller Run To You: Deception so Deadly and Deception So Dark.

Her favorite foods are guacamole and cookie dough. But not together. That would be gross.

Clara Kensie - RUN TO YOU Excerpt: At the Park

Please enjoy this excerpt from RUN TO YOU. Sixteen-year-old Tessa and her psychically gifted family are on the run from a killer hired by the government, and they flee from town to town, hiding behind aliases to stay alive. In this scene, Tessa and her psychokinetic sister are at the park, and they spot the boy Jillian wants to set Tessa up with.

Doubt, mixed with the tiniest bit of hope, pumped through my veins as Jillian and I headed home. We cut across the park, where squealing preschoolers raced down the slide at the playground. Parents rooted for their Little Leaguers on the baseball field to the left, and on the soccer field to the right, a group of little kids surrounded a tall, broad-shouldered boy in a light yellow T-shirt.

Tristan Walker.

He juggled a soccer ball from his feet to knees to ankles, up to his head and back again, to the delight of the kids watching him.

“Hey Tristan!” Across the park, a bushy-eyebrowed boy whistled and waved a tennis racquet in the air. With a powerful kick, Tristan sent the ball soaring over the kids’ heads and into the soccer net across the field. He gave each of the kids a high five, then picked up a racquet from the grass and headed to the tennis court.

“How was lunch today?” Jillian said, blinking innocently at me.

“Horrible. Please stop trying to set me up.”

“But you like him, right?” A little red leaf blew in front of me, making a heart shape in the air.

I swatted it away with the back of my hand. “Stop that. We’re in public. And no, I don’t like him. Not like that.”

“He doesn’t have to be your boyfriend. He can just be a friend.” The leaf made a series of wide swoops before skidding onto the grass. “It would make Mom happy too. She’s just sick that you won’t make friends.”

I picked the leaf up and held it by the stem. Crimson on one side, brown on the other. I twirled it between my fingertips until it became a colorless blur. “They can’t be real friends when we can’t even tell them our real names.”

Then I crushed the leaf into tiny little pieces and let them flutter to the ground.

*My Thoughts*

As the synopsis states, Sarah (Tessa) and her family is on the run. Each place they moved to starts new lies they have to tell with new names. One truth is that Sarah's family is gifted. Sarah works hard to stay invisible until she meets Tristan...and it all changes. It seems that there is more to this family than what is revealed in this first part of the Run To You serial! I was completely on edge with each turn of the page. At the end, I found myself holding my breath! Well, on to Part 2: Second Glance.

*My Thoughts*

Tessa is finally getting that normal teenage life that she has been deprived,of since her family has been on the run, until she met Tristan. However, Tristan hasn't been totally honest with Tessa either. Tessa soon learns that there are more secrets behind the "truths" that she knows. What a thriller! I have caught myself catching my breath with each turn of the page! Talk about revelations! Who can Tessa trust!?! What is the truth!?!

Part Three: Third Charm

(Available February 15, 2014)

Part Three in the riveting romantic thriller about a family on the run from a deadly past and a first love that will transcend secrets, lies and danger…

Betrayed, heartbroken, and determined to save her family, Tessa Carson refuses to give in to Tristan Walker’s pleas for forgiveness. *My Thoughts*

Whoa! What a reveal! Tessa definitely struggles to sift through everything she knows to be true and what they are telling her. All the while, Tristan struggles to gain Tessa's trust back. Through all the secrets and lies, Tessa finds that she's not as "neutral" as she was made out to be. Oh my gosh! What a romantic thriller! I was gasping as the "truths" were being revealed to Tessa! I just couldn't stop reading until I got to the end! Now, I am definitely excited for Part Four, Five & Six...coming this June 2014! Can't wait!

**About the Author**

Clara Kensie has always been fascinated by the dark side. As a teen, she read the darkest books she could find—everything by Stephen King, John Saul, and V.C. Andrews—and she watched horror movies alone at night, just for the thrill (this is the part where Clara’s parents would remind her that she was so scared after watching Poltergeist that she slept on their bedroom floor for two weeks). The complexities of family, friendship, and love have always intrigued Clara. Wanting to study human nature, in college she triple-majored in psychology, sociology, and social services, then threw in a criminal justice minor for good measure. She interned at a group home for troubled teen girls. She visited prisons. 

Today Clara lives outside Chicago with her husband, their two kids, and their trouble-making cat, appropriately named The King of Chaos. She’s poured her obsession with the dark side into writing fiction—twisty mysteries and chilling thrillers for young adults, to be precise.
