My Thoughts
Note: This review contains spoilers
"Tape 4, side B" is about expression and trust. Hannah is desperately trying to find someone to confide in but no one is trustworthy enough.
He wasn’t that important to a viewer, but Hannah thought differently. The depth of the person on this side of tape four was lacking. As a viewer, we’ve seen the character Ryan Shaver frequently especially around Tony, but it isn’t until this episode that Hannah displays him as a major actor in the series. If conceited and egotistical were the director’s goal, they succeeded. Tommy Dorfman’s character, Ryan, had stereotypical elements that were on the antagonistic side: flamboyant, a pitched voice, and an attitude that screamed “I can do whatever I want, bitch.” I appreciate the effort but even with small cameos in previous episodes, I can’t bring myself to care for this reason Hannah died. He was more like fodder or a little kindle to an already existing wild fire.
Unfortunately, episode 8 of 13 Reasons Why does not prepare for the bomb shell that is episode 9.
