*Excerpt*

Someone is coming.

The rasp of shoes against cement, slow and menacing, rises from the stairwell above. Kai’s eyes flicker with calculation as he places himself between me and potential danger.

Protective. Deadly.

I grip his arm tighter, seeking reassurance in his solid presence. The footsteps grow louder, each one a ticking bomb counting down to our discovery. Every muscle in Kai’s body is coiled and ready to unleash violence.

The rasp stops. Silence is deafening.

Kai inches forward, peering through the gap. His expression shifts from tense focus to something darker, more frightening. I see it in his eyes—a lethal edge that promises retribution.

He pushes me back to the deep end of the alcove. “Stay here,” he whispers.

Before I can respond, he slides out the alcove, leaving me alone in the dark. My palms are slick with fear as I clutch my bag tightly to my chest, trying to ignore the pounding in my ears.

Minutes tick by like hours. My breath hitches as a dreadful thought crosses my mind—what if Kai doesn’t come back?

No. Don’t go there, Marianne.

A muffled thud from above makes me gasp.

I bite back a scream when a shadow falls down the stairs with dull clings. Kai materializes in a blur, leaping from one landing to another until he reaches the floor and barrels into the shadow-man with a force that sends them both barreling on the cold floor.

The shadow struggles and trashes under the pounding of Kai’s fists.

Crack.

Bones snap. The shadow stops moving.

I get out of the alcove, my legs wobbly with adrenaline.

Kai’s hands are coated in blood, his knuckles scratched and bruised, but his eyes shine with sinister satisfaction. “Come on, love. We need to go.”

He’s not even out of breath!

I blink up at Kai. “Who’s this?” is all I dare ask.

“Bounty hunter.” He gives me a wicked smile. “Some entry-level dirtbag.”

Blood pools under the dead man’s head like a macabre halo.

Kind of pretty against the concrete.

I frown at Kai busted left eyebrow. “You okay?”

He strides up to me and presses his forehead to mine, smudging his blood on me. Sweat, cedar, and spice curl up my nostrils, and I shiver.

“Of course. I just lost my focus a bit when he saw you,” he replies.

Aww…

Before I understand, I squint at him and coo. “My hero.”

A wolfish chuckle erupts from his throat, and he kisses my temple. “I’d rather be your villain.”

That’s hot as hell.

His lips linger there, a wet tongue darting out to taste the sweat on my skin, creating a spark we don’t have the time to explore.

If this is a dream, I never, ever, want to wake up. In the distance, an engine vrooms.

A single drop of sweat rolls down his temple, and from this close, I can see the dilatation of his pores. My mouth waters at the thought of licking the salty trail as it glides down his chin and along his jugular, disappearing into the collar of his shirt.

Tires screech.

There’s a vibration inside of me when I look him in the eyes again, and I’m trapped there, my lower lip languishing. Kai’s jaw tenses, teeth tight, his upper lip ticks, and he bends a bit, pulled down by an unknown force until his nose rests above mine.

Oh, dear god. I’ve never wanted to fuck a man this badly.

Our bubble is so thick we forget the world.

We should move.

Kai pulls away. “Please… Save that feral look for later,” he murmurs, brushing a thumb across my flushed cheek.

Feral? Me? What an unusual thought.

Kai’s fingers linger for another heartbeat before he steps back, wiping his bloody knuckles on his jeans.

The clicks of guns being cocked resound next to us. A red dot appears on Kai’s chest. Then, a low whistle.

And that’s when everything goes black.

**About the Author**
I’m Elsa Jacobs, an indie author of contemporary romance and romantic suspense/thriller. I write unique love stories with a substantial amount of twists, turns, and spices.

Let me tell you how it all started. A few years back, I was battling brutal insomnia that just wouldn’t quit. Nights were a blur of characters and plots swirling around in my head, refusing to let me catch some shut-eye. It was maddening. Writing became my escape hatch—I had to get these stories out of my head.

In less than a year, I wrote four drafts, all because I needed an outlet for the chaos that was keeping me up at night. Publishing wasn’t even on my radar; I just needed some peace of mind. But then, something unexpected happened. I sent a chapter to an editor, not really expecting much to come of it.

But instead of a brush-off, I found myself teaming up with that editor to bring my first novel to life.

It was a game-changer. That’s when I decided to take the plunge and share the rest of my drafts, bit by bit, with the world.

My stories might have been born out of sleepless nights, but they’ve become my sanctuary, and I hope they become yours too.

Cheers,

Elsa.

They gasped and spun toward the voice that floated from the trees. Sinclair jumped and brandished his sword blindly in the air.

Smirking, the vampire emerged from the shadows.

“But you knew that.” He winked at her, his mouth stained the color of cherries.

Lilac’s soul nearly left her body.

He was dressed in the same black undershirt and quilted vest that both Enzo and Mathis had worn, over a pair of their uniform black trousers. One of their dark leather baldrics was laced across his chest.

In one hand, he held the stone goblet that had been on the floor next to the utensils, and in the other, he clutched a limp arm—a severed arm, torn from its body at the shoulder by brute force. Humming pleasantly to himself, he tilted the appendage and squeezed it like a summer orange, causing the blood to drain. Each red droplet clung to the mottled flesh before dripping clean into the cup.

“I apologize for keeping the both of you waiting.” Garin spoke methodically, observing the scarlet liquid. He frowned when the blood seemed to stop flowing altogether, but instead of stopping there, he held a finger up for them to wait and placed the goblet down as he knelt next to it. The vampire then grabbed the bluish hand and flexed the forearm and bicep, pumping the last of it into the chalice.

“Just trying to get every last bit. Some Daemons are on the brink of starvation, you know. It would be a shame for me to be wasteful.”

Lilac and Sinclair watched, petrified. Each hollow plink shattered the otherwise deafening silence.

When they didn’t answer, Garin clicked his tongue without looking back up at them. “Don’t pretend to be friendly now, you two. Come on.” He spoke coldly, yet his voice was warm. It felt intimate, made Lilac shudder, as if he’d dragged a blade along her naked form. “No more pretending, now that our truths are out in the open.”

She said nothing.

“You don’t drink blood!” Sinclair finally raised his voice, his sword at the ready.

Smiling down through his lashes, Garin licked each of his fingers clean and used the tattered sleeve hanging off the arm in an attempt to wipe the blood off his face, only smearing it further, before carelessly tossing the limb into the fire. “It appears my reputation has preceded me.”

Nausea had replaced her hunger. It was true. All true. The final vestiges of her denial of what he was, that it was all some idiotic misunderstanding on Sinclair’s part, crumbled. The way Garin didn’t eat anything at the inn, the weight of his gaze upon her, as if he were sizing up a pie.

The way he’d tried to trap her.

Courage can be costly

Genre:
Young Adult
Action/Adventure
Series:
The Invictus Chronicles, #1
Publish Date:
October 18, 2022
Publisher:
Michael J. Bowler

Synopsis:
Courage can be costly. Orphaned brothers Vincent and Dennis Villanueva learn the truth of those words when they create a masked crime fighter and turn him loose on Los Angeles. The brainchild of fourteen-year-old Dennis and embodied in twenty-one-year-old Vincent, “Invictus” hits the streets to jumpstart apathetic Angelenos into taking a more active role in their city.

But reality isn’t a comic book. Vincent finds poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, abuse, and cast-off children. Labeled a vigilante and criminal, the shy grad student with formidable martial arts talent and abysmal people skills soon doubts his ability to make an impact.

Forced to straddle an ambiguous line between moral and legal, he becomes disheartened and secretive, hiding the truth of what he’s doing from Dennis and driving a wedge between them. Feeling neglected, Dennis infiltrates a dangerous drug ring to show Vincent he can be just as heroic, not knowing that the woman in charge is weaving an insidious plot against Invictus as part of her citywide scheme of vengeance. In a race against time, Vincent must regain Dennis’s trust before the brother he loves is lost to him forever.

*Excerpt*

Vincent had practically grown up in James and Linda’s house. Across the street and a few houses down from theirs, it had been his and Dennis’s home away from home, with James and Linda like second parents to both of them, not just their godson, Dennis. Unlike their house, this one was single story, but it had long hall- ways, a huge kitchen because Linda loved to cook, and a big sparring room off the garage.

Vincent’s dad had installed his own workout room at the house, but James’s was larger and he’d incorporated strength training equipment that the boys had used over the years to strengthen their joints and muscles.

The Villanueva clan had spent many a laugh-filled Thanksgiving or Christmas at the Stevens home, and the large brightly lit dining room felt hauntingly empty without his parents sitting at the table with them. Loy and James had been part- ners in the police department as far back as Vincent could remember, and the families were more like one than two.

Sitting at the burnished wood table passing bowls of rice back and forth choked off most of the words he considered saying because too many memories intruded. Dennis, he knew, felt their missing parents even more acutely.

James shoveled mashed potatoes into his mouth and swigged from a glass of

water. “I still can’t get over what happened yesterday,” he offered. “Only Dennis could            have a graduation like that.”

He tried for a smile, but Dennis half-heartedly returned it as he chewed on his chicken.

Yeah, he’s fighting the PTSD again, Vincent realized.

Linda said, “I would’ve preferred to watch the excitement from Vincent’s vantage point – the parking lot.” She smiled and reached out to cup Dennis’s hand with one of hers. “I was so terrified for you, baby.”

Dennis swallowed his food. “Yeah, me too. Lucky Invictus showed up, huh, James?”

James grunted as he swallowed a bite of chicken and placed his fork down onto his plate. “Truth be told, he did save your life, Dennis. He saved everyone. Torres was wrong.”

“You tried to save me,” Dennis added. “Thanks for that.”

“I’d do anything for you boys, you know that,” James affirmed, his face set with determination. “I promised your dad I’d–”

Dennis flinched and averted his eyes.

“Well, uh, I’m happy Invictus showed up when he did,” Vincent tossed out, knowing it sounded lame, but wanting to distract Dennis. “I’m the only one al- lowed to take down my baby brother.”

He elbowed Dennis and drew out the smile he loved.

“Only cuz you outweigh me, Vince,” Dennis said, the fire returning to his voice. “You know I can kick your ass by catching you off-guard.”

“Exactly how many times have you managed to do that?” Dennis laughed. “Okay, once. But I’ll do it again.” Vincent returned the laugh and they high-fived.

Linda chuckled. “I almost had a heart attack yesterday and these two laugh about it.”

“That’s us guys for you, Linda,” James said, and they resumed eating.

Vincent scooped some rice onto his plate and passed the bowl to Dennis. Trying to sound casual, he said, “So James, are you and Torres really gonna treat Invictus like a criminal? I mean, he saved Dennis and those other people, right?”

“No choice, Vince,” James said around a mouthful of asparagus. “Like Torres said, nobody can be allowed to operate outside the law.”

“Even if they’re doing something good?” Dennis asked.

“Even then,” James responded. “If we let guys like that do their thing, order eventually breaks down and we end up with chaos. Your d—” He stopped himself quickly. “You’ll understand that better when you’re older. Life isn’t a comic book.”

“It could be,” Dennis offered before focusing on his food.

Vincent noted James and Linda exchange a confused look and hoped they weren’t making the older couple suspicious. Then James said something that al- most stopped his heart.

“You know, Linda, there was something about his fighting style.” “Whose?”

“Invictus,” James went on, pausing with his utensils in mid-air. “I was just telling Torres today that there was something familiar about his fighting style. Did you notice anything, hun? You’ve trained half the young black belts in L.A.”

She considered a moment. “Now that you mention it, there was something about the fluidity of the body, the way he spun into those kicks.”

“It’ll come to me. I never forget a fighting style.”

Vincent kept his head down, but stole a quick glance at Dennis. His brother was looking his way and wore the same facial expression.

This wasn’t a good development.
