Genre:

Series:
The Breaking Series
Publish Date:

Summary from Goodreads:
All Beatriz “Bia” Fernandes wants is to prove herself—to her family and friends—though it’s hard to prove anything with an overbearing father and three famous polo-playing older brothers. After her acceptance into college results in a heated family argument, the Brazilian girl leaves everything behind to find her own American dream.

College life away from home is perfect until the people she believes to be her friends turn on her. With lies and rumors threatening to suffocate her, Bia turns to her only freedom. Riding.

But one thing gets in the way of her escape. Garrett Blackwell and his bad cowboy attitude. Working at the ranch is his obligation, bugging Bia is his newfound hobby. His thick skin and easy grin don’t hide what Bia already knows—this misunderstood and lonely cowboy fights his own demons. Brushing horses’ coats and mucking out stalls shouldn’t be this sexy, and it isn’t long before he becomes a part of her distraction.

However, escaping won’t solve her problems, and it’s up to Bia to break down the fences around her and prove her strength—not to her family and friends, but to herself … and for Garrett. Because standing on her own doesn’t have to mean standing alone.

*My Thoughts*

Note: This review contains no spoilers

Hmmm....Breaking Fences!?!? I loved it! A story of overcoming the many prejudices and stereotypes that many people still deal with today. Although this can be read as a standalone novel, I would suggest reading the Breaking the Reins (#1 of The Breaking Series) first. Because I read the first book, I already had a sense of knowing the history of the characters, especially Bia. I got a better understanding of the personalities of these characters that were introduced to me in the first book. Many of the characters in the first book are in this second book in the series. Juliana Haygert did it again! She wrote an amazing story of love, courage, and heartache. I would also say that, in a way, this is a coming of age story for Bia...a journey/obstacle for her to find our what she really wants to do with her life and finding the strength to overcome the "fences" that entered her life.

Just like in Breaking the Reins, Juliana incorporated and intertwined this "coming of age" story with the real life issue of bullying that today's youth deals with every day. In this story, Bia goes off to college hoping to make a future for herself and find herself in a new country apart from her family's famous polo career. But Bia soon finds out that it's not all that she thought it would be. It's worse! People can be cruel, and Juliana wrote these well developed characters with strong individual personalities...be it good and bad, that there was no mistaking what kind of people they are that added to the telling of this story.

I was so taken with this story...some because I could relate. Being the new person is not easy. There will always be people who will either like you or hate you. And, that's what Bia had to deal with in this as she started this new life in college, miles away from home and family. However, Bia does find away to cope and deal with the "fences" that has invaded her life. Riding! Although it's not the same as being home, she found a place to enjoy what she enjoys most...horseback riding. However, in comes Garrett and changes all that. Everything doesn't seem to be what she thought. But, Bia eventually realizes a lot of things...what she wants and who she really is, and takes the steps to go after it.

This story is told in Bia's point of view, which made her story even more gripping and personal. I was completely appalled at how stereotypes can really hurt, and how people can be so cruel. Juliana Haygert, again, wrote a story dealing with such cruelties, to people and animals alike, with such intensity and empathy. I felt my heart being ripped apart as I read through the pain and cruelty that Bia and Midnight had to endure. My eyes teared up throughout the book! Damn it! I just wanted to punch these people in the nose...hahaha! That's how intense this book was...just like the Breaking the Reins!

Breaking Fences is a story about one girl's coming of age, in her own way, in a new country, and defying and overcoming all the "fences" that was laid before her. A story of courage, strength, love, and growing up. Definitely, a book that made me cry for Bia and the horses, and cheer for her when she finally stood up for herself.

*My Thoughts*

Note: This review contains no spoilers

As I sit hear thinking about what to say about this book, my mind keeps replaying the book over and over in head. It was that GOOD! I got so caught up with Hannah's life...all the good and all the bad. The summary already says a lot of what to expect in this story, but I don't think it prepared me for what was gut wrenching and heartbreaking story of one girl's life turned upside down with all that has happened in her past and present. Yes, it did touch on the subject of domestic violence which, in reality, is a problem that a good number of women and children face every day. And, Juliana Haygert did an absolutely amazing job in writing this into the storyline with great care...with great compassion.

I learned a bit about it in my college days when I took Psychology...I even had to do a group presentation on this subject. All the research in the world could not make all this suffering any less painful and horrifying. With Juliana's adept ability for creating these well developed characters, my emotions were also pulled in to Hannah's struggle with dealing with such abuse. After each turn of the page, I recognized many forms of domestic abuse that abusers do to "break" down their wives and/or girlfriends....even animals. I was gasping through it all. I seriously felt like I wanted to "jump" into the story to help Hannah! That's how riled with fear and frustration I got as I kept reading. I'm not saying that I'm an expert, but from what I did learn and remember, this is a subject that had to be handled with compassion and respect for those that do escape and survive such situations. And, Juliana Haygert accomplished that in this book.

Being told in Hannah's point of view made the story and the horrifying abuse even more appalling as if it was me going through it. That feeling of helplessness and being broken by Hannah just gripped my heart. But with the help of Leo coming into her life, this helped her open her eyes to what she didn't see before.

I was also fascinated with the incorporation of a foreign language, particularly Portuguese, since several characters originated from Brazil in which Portuguese is the official language. Plus, this amazing author is originally from Brazil. These words and phrases added an elegance and authenticity to these Brazilian characters. It took me a while since I had to go back to the beginning of the book to remember the meanings of these words and phrases, but pretty soon, I was able to keep up with it.

When I think about it, especially my heart is still racing after finishing this book, I am totally blown away at Juliana Haygert's ability to write such a beautiful and heart wrenching story of courage, survival, compassion, love, and healing. This is definitely a must read book...it's not a typical contemporary romance. Not everything is always what it seems.
