Genre:
New Adult
Paranormal M/M Romance
Publish Date:

Synopsis:
One angry, grieving boy.
Chase DeWitt is fourteen when his mother dies and he stumbles into the woods beyond his home, angry and heartbroken. He didn’t know that it would change the course of his life.

Two broken, lonely men.

Tyler Reid is twenty three, grumpy and angry, trying to take care of a injured brother, and rebuilding a life blind hatred destroyed in one night.
But he understands the boy who stumbles out of the woods and into his life, understands the grief in his eyes and the rage that makes him shake. And there is something in that familiar grief that makes Tyler trust Chase, when trusting humans has only ever lead to disaster.

And a falling down house they make a home.

As the summer passes and the years turn, Chase cares for Tyler’s brother, helps him rebuilding the house in the woods, as they help each other rebuild a life beyond the little house, Chase realizes two important things: these men matter to him, could be family.
And they are not nearly as human as they seem.

*Excerpt*
“Are you really ok with this?” Chase asks later that night when Tyler slips into his bedroom and curls behind him on his bed. It’s not small but it always feels like it is when Tyler is in it with him.
He’s quiet, so Chase tilts his head back and says, “You don’t have to. We can find another way.”
“I’m ok. We need to do this,” Tyler says.
Chase nods. He touches the runes tattooed on Tyler’s ribs, the ones he marked Tyler with, and Tyler arches into the touch. “Remember you’re mine, Tyler. Whatever happens, whatever she says, you’re mine. And I won't let her hurt what's mine.”
Tyler shuffles into him, presses his face into Chase’s throat, and they cling to each other as the night deepens around them.

*My Thoughts*

Note: This review contains NO spoilers

I have to admit that I enjoyed this book. Although this is my first time reading an M/M romance, this one was beautifully written. The story wove a complex tale of growing up and friendship with a subtle hint of magic and/or mysticism. With its third person point of view, Slow Shift gave the feel of "seeing" the story from the outside, as if witnessing everything that these characters are going through and what they are feeling. However, it has been a while since I read in third person that it took me a while to get into the flow of this story; but, it did not take away from the overall feelings that this story evoked. With the various elements of storytelling intertwined into this story, it allowed me to feel for and understand these characters.

Furthermore, it would be difficult to just categorize Slow Shift in any one particular genres when it touched on a variety of such. I think that's what made it work, too. Yes, there's a coming-of-age element. Yes, there's a romance element. Yes, there's also a paranormal element, too. And, it worked! I would have to say that this is a beautiful and emotional story of love and friendship that will touch any readers' heart.

*Excerpt*
She closes her eyes as he carefully puts everything away, then he shifts, lifting her and settling her in his lap. He does this, sometimes. A lot, actually.
They have very few boundaries. Between their friendship and the hours they spend working together, Lola spends more time with Tiny than almost anyone, and sometimes—when he’s carelessly affectionate, drawing her into him on the couch when she’s half-asleep, when he carries her to the breakroom for sleep and makes her favorite on his nights to cook at the station, the way he always seems to be looking after her—it makes it very hard to remember that they’re friends, that Tiny doesn’t see her as anything more than the tomboy Dempsey befriended that never did go away.
She’s ok with that, with being the tomboy sidekick. She knows Dempsey and Tiny and even Cal adore her, knows she has a place in their little group—and she’s ok with that place being the one of the guys' friends.
Sometimes, though, moments like this when his hand strokes broad and warm protectively over her back and his chin nudges into her hair, and she feels small and sheltered—moments like this, she hates it. It’s hard to remember her boundaries, and what she isn’t, when he holds her like she’s precious.
“You ok, Lo?” he murmurs.
She nods against his chest. “We should go back,” she mumbles.
“Take your time. They’re not gonna miss us.”
We’re half the groomsmen, Tiny. They’re gonna miss us.”
He laughs this soft huff that makes her belly squirm. Everyone says that Tiny is quiet—that he doesn’t talk, that he’s closed off.
And she knows a lot of it is just that she’s been friends with him for so long that she’s slipped past that silence and reticence, but she sees him, with Dempsey and Cal, with their other friends, where he’s content to be quiet and observe.
He’s talkative with her—laughs with her, his placid calm mask cracking to reveal the wide smile that’s sarcastic, warm, genuine, and soft.
She wants to believe that means something.
She knows she needs to get up and get some distance because the wedding and the hand still sweeping over her back is fucking with her head.
“You ready?” she asks, shifting away. His arms tighten for a moment, steadying her before he releases her entirely and Lola scrambles out of his lap.
Tiny is watching her, eyes dark and patient as he nods, standing. “Yeah, I’m ready. Let’s go.”
