From Chapter 7
I wake up an hour before my alarm goes off. As I get ready, I find myself unable to decide on an outfit. I know, I know – it doesn’t really matter what I wear and I’ll be naked in front of this doctor, so why try to impress? Still, I take extra time to put myself together.
I also attempt to put in a full day’s work before our three o’clock appointment. Marco has forgiven me, but there are times when I can feel his eyes on me. Tomorrow is our second chance at the bank pitch. I email Marco, informing him of my appointment and assuring him I will put the finishing touches on the presentation later tonight. With any luck, I’ll be back at work in an hour. As I gather my things, Linda, passing my office, slows, looks pointedly at her watch and back at me, with my purse and jacket in hand, and raises an eyebrow. I smile, choking back an explanation, which I don’t owe her. Brushing past her, I head out to the Hope Clinic, which is nearby, right downtown.
Jack meets me in the waiting room, which is deserted. We can’t be the only ones who have this trouble – what a horrible thought. We settle in nervously and begin our wait, neither of us able to keep our eyes off Dr. Greenberg’s receptionist. She is stunning: early twenties, long blonde hair, pouty pink lips, sparkling blue eyes, tall and very slim with huge breasts. She exudes fruitfulness.
I notice the nameplate on her desk reads Mira. More like Hera, Goddess of Fertility. I lean over to Jack and jokingly whisper, “You wanna bet she’s here for the guys to lust after in the jerk-off room?” Jack just nods and looks away quickly. I suddenly recall his fast “deposit” in the previous lab. Aha.
Two long hours later, with Jack checking the time every four minutes and muttering to himself, the nurse finally calls us. So much for getting back to the office. Dr. Greenberg might be the best in the world, but his time management sucks.
We are greeted by a large man – in girth, not height – sporting a monochromatic suit of dull gray. My breath catches as I stare at the thousands of photos of perfect babies papering his walls. I silently pray that these are real babies he has helped create, not a twisted way to decorate.

**About the Author**
Jen Cumming had two dreams: to be a mother and a writer. The first was much harder than she'd imagined, but it gave her plenty of material for her second dream. Now she's realized both and traded drug cocktails and early morning line-ups at the fertility clinic for juice boxes and evening PTA meetings.
Jen's latest dream is to live in a small village in France and eat croissants. Being allergic to wheat might hamper that dream, so in the meantime, she does her best to balance life with two young children and run a business with her husband in Toronto. She loves to spend time at the cottage in the summer, ski in the winter, and travel whenever she can.
